Islamic Manuscript Association Lecture Series "Deciphering Medieval Libraries of the Islamic World" Thomas Gray Room Pembroke College Cambridge University Cambridge, UK Thursday 10 September 2015 18.30 pm Registration required; Free of charge A lecture by Professor Francois Deroche, Chair in the History of the Qur'an, Text and Transmission at the College de France in Paris. The Islamic Manuscript Association, in cooperation with the Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation and Shahnama Centre for Persian Studies, Pembroke College, Cambridge, is pleased to announce the next in its series of occasional lectures: "Deciphering Medieval libraries of the Islamic world", presented by Professor Francois Deroche, Chair in the History of the Qur'an, Text and Transmission at the College de France in Paris. Most of what we know about the libraries which flourished in the Mediaeval Islamic world is based on literary accounts since the collections themselves almost completely disappeared. They have been largely understood as their Western equivalents although the place of the written word in the Islamic tradition should induce us to approach their history with more care. The lecture will look at this topic and the evidence left which could help us to understand better the libraries of the Mediaeval Islamic world and to decipher their functions. The lecture is limited to 40 persons and places will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The event is free of charge but registration is essential for admission. For more information, and to register, please see the Association's <URL:http://www.islamicmanuscript.org/lectureseries/2015.aspx> The Islamic Manuscript Association is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting Islamic manuscript collections and supporting those who work with them. It was formed in response to the urgent need to address the poor preservation and inaccessibility of many Islamic manuscript collections around the world. The Association's lecture series publicises work with Islamic manuscripts, bringing expert knowledge and insights to new audiences beyond the Association's core membership. If your institution is interested in collaborating with the Association to present a particular lecture or to suggest a speaker, please write to us at admin<-at->islamicmanuscript<.>org.
