Research Conservator
Centre for Textile Conservation
University of Glasgow, UK

Fixed Term
The post is for two years, full-time, from 1 January 2016.

Research and Teaching Grade 6: UKP27,057- UKP30,434
REF: 011024

We are looking for a research conservator to join an
interdisciplinary team to take part in a ground-breaking
investigation of a key aspect of Pacific culture. The three-year
research project, Situating Pacific Barkcloth Production in Time and
Place, is being funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council,
and is a collaboration between the University of Glasgow, Royal
Botanic Gardens, Kew and the National Museum of Natural History, The
Smithsonian Institution.

Barkcloth is made from the inner bark of the paper mulberry tree and
other plants. By studying the material closely, it is hoped that we
will gain new insight into the lost skills, culture and knowledge
associated with this ancient craft. This innovative project will
integrate the methodologies of museum anthropology, history,
scientific analysis, botany and conservation. We are looking for
staff who bring technical skills to the project and who also enjoy
working in a multi-disciplinary environment.

The post-holder will undertake conservation treatment and improve
the collection storage of Pacific barkcloth artefacts belonging to
The Hunterian at the University of Glasgow and the Economic Botany
Collection at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. (S)he will also carry out
research investigating the links between different plant species,
degradation mechanisms and condition, and how these impact on the
development of appropriate treatments. The successful candidate
will contribute to the dissemination of project outcomes through
research publications, conferences and the project website.
