Subject: Historic Churches
The 2015 digital edition of Historic Churches is now available free of charge at <URL:http://www.buildingconservation.com/books/churches2015/> providing 11 articles on a range of essential conservation issues by leading specialists. Maintaining historic churches remains a perennial issue. In an article on funding, annual expenditure of the Church of England on its buildings is estimated to be UKP107 million, far short of the UKP175 million required. Another article outlines an innovative approach that makes the most of limited resources. With the help of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, small groups of neighbouring churches are coming together to form maintenance co-operatives, saving time and money by sharing equipment and expertise. Technical articles in this edition include the conservation of fine brasswork, the use of permeable finishes for interior decoration and the installation of protective glazing at York Minster as part of one of Europe's largest and most complex conservation projects. The historic significance of our ecclesiastical heritage is highlighted in articles on ledger stones, medieval corbel carvings, and Russia's wooden churches. Historic Churches is a full colour magazine published annually by Cathedral Communications. 6,000 copies are printed and distributed throughout the UK each year. The digital edition extends its readership to all who care for historic places of worship worldwide.
