Collections assistant
Science Museum Group

Five months fixed term contract starting 7 October 2015

The aim of the Medical galleries project is to create the world's
greatest centre for the understanding of medicine through a
ground-breaking suite of new galleries and an associated public
programme. The Medical Gallery Project will transform the first
floor of the Science Museum to create a magnificent new home for the
Museum's medical collections.

The first part of this will be to decant the existing displays into
storage ready for their re-interpretation. The Collections
Assistant will be based predominantly at the Science Museum in South
Kensington, working within the Medical galleries to prepare around
6,000 objects for decant and dispatch into storage.

The Collections Assistant will be part of a larger diverse team
working alongside and supporting the Conservation and Collections
Care teams, curatorial and project based colleagues and a large
number of volunteers. He or she will be based at the three sites of
South Kensington, Blythe House (the small to medium size object
store at Kensington Olympia, London) and at Wroughton (the
large-object store, near Swindon). There will be the opportunity to
work at all three sites, as required.

He or she will assist in the care, movement, disassembly, packing
for transit, storage and location tracking of the Science Museum's
Medical collections to be removed into temporary and permanent
storage.

You will use best practice to meet strategic and statutory
requirements and ensure that these tasks are carried out in a safe
and secure manner to comply with current legislation and following
best professional practice for yourself and other colleagues.

We are looking for a motivated individual who has worked in a
diverse team, with experience of working confidently with historical
artefacts and collections in a museum or gallery setting.
