Collections assistant Science Museum Group Five months fixed term contract starting 7 October 2015 The aim of the Medical galleries project is to create the world's greatest centre for the understanding of medicine through a ground-breaking suite of new galleries and an associated public programme. The Medical Gallery Project will transform the first floor of the Science Museum to create a magnificent new home for the Museum's medical collections. The first part of this will be to decant the existing displays into storage ready for their re-interpretation. The Collections Assistant will be based predominantly at the Science Museum in South Kensington, working within the Medical galleries to prepare around 6,000 objects for decant and dispatch into storage. The Collections Assistant will be part of a larger diverse team working alongside and supporting the Conservation and Collections Care teams, curatorial and project based colleagues and a large number of volunteers. He or she will be based at the three sites of South Kensington, Blythe House (the small to medium size object store at Kensington Olympia, London) and at Wroughton (the large-object store, near Swindon). There will be the opportunity to work at all three sites, as required. He or she will assist in the care, movement, disassembly, packing for transit, storage and location tracking of the Science Museum's Medical collections to be removed into temporary and permanent storage. You will use best practice to meet strategic and statutory requirements and ensure that these tasks are carried out in a safe and secure manner to comply with current legislation and following best professional practice for yourself and other colleagues. We are looking for a motivated individual who has worked in a diverse team, with experience of working confidently with historical artefacts and collections in a museum or gallery setting.
