The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is the National Museum of the
Netherlands.  Its collection includes 1.1 million works of art and
objects from the Netherlands, European and Asian countries, spanning
the period from the Middle Ages up to the 21th century.  The
Rijksmuseum attracts over two million visitors per year.  It
reopened to the public in April 2013 after a large-scale renovation
campaign.  This resulted in a breathtakingly beautiful building,
innovative layout and displays, spectacular exhibitions, exciting
events and various facilities catering to all ages.

The Metal Conservation Studio, which is part of the Conservation and
Scientific Research Department, is currently seeking a Metal
Conservator 36 hours a weeks For a period of 4 years

The metal collection consists of approximately 10,000 objects, some
of which are housed in the repository in Lelystad. Conservation work
will be carried out in Amsterdam.  Other work can be carried out in
the museum or in the repository. The metal conservation staff
comprises two metal conservators.

In general terms, the conservator is responsible for the
conservation and maintenance of objects in the collection in such a
way that they remain of the desired quality now and in the future.
The main tasks include:

    Helping to monitor the physical state of the collection in such
    a way that (imminent) deterioration is identified and corrective
    measures can be taken in good time

    Carrying out conservation work and related scientific research
    in such a way that, while taking account of numerous important
    variables, objects are conserved and/or maintained in their
    required state and the quality requirements are complied with

    Contributing to the development of methods, techniques and
    ethical and aesthetic criteria for research and the execution of
    restoration and conservation work, as well as participating in
    in scientific research projects, carrying out specific
    scientific research and reporting the findings

    Assessing the physical state of objects in such a way that
    well-balanced decisions can be taken in the event of
    acquisitions and loans, etc., as well as drawing up descriptions
    of the condition of objects, determining the need for
    conservation with an estimate of the costs, risk of damage
    during transport and loans, etc.

    Advising third parties on the physical condition of objects

    Drafting scientific proposals for international collaboration
    projects such as Horizon 2020

    Participating in international scientific project-based
    activities, including involvement in consultation bodies and
    carrying out substantive and administrative tasks in relation to
    projects

Requirements:

    MA or MSc in Art Conservation, specialized in metals

    Minimum of five year experience in a related working environment

    Experience with carrying out conservations and recording the
    results

    Experience with applying new scientific analytic methods

    Experience with working with people from other disciplines

    Experience with managing junior co-workers and interns

    Reflective attitude towards conservation ethics and aesthetic
    issues

    Good social and communication skills

    An analytical and problem-solving attitude

Terms of employment The conservator will be appointed on a project
basis, for the period of four years.  Salary to be determined
depending on training and experience, with a minimum salary of
Euro2,842 and a maximum salary of Euro3,718 gross per month (scale
10) based on full-time employment of 36 hours, excluding holiday
allowance and year-end bonus.  This appointment is subject to the
Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Museums.
