Call for Papers AIC Wooden Artifacts Group (WAG) and Wooden Artifacts Group/Objects Specialty Group joint session American Institute for Conservation ("AIC") Annual Meeting Montreal, Canada May 13-17, 2016 Overview: The Wooden Artifacts Group of the American Institute for Conservation seeks submissions for papers to be presented at its specialty session at the AIC Annual Conference to be held in Montreal from May 13-17, 2016. In addition to its general specialty session, WAG is pleased to offer a joint session with the Objects Specialty Group. Given the common ground between these two groups, it is sure to be a rich and interesting exchange. Attendees may submit abstracts for the WAG and/or joint specialty sessions. The 2016 AIC Conference's overall theme is "Emergency! Preparing for Disasters and Confronting the Unexpected in Conservation," an exploration of lessons learned from past experience and strategies for the future. While papers on the emergency theme are encouraged for the WAG specialty session and the WAG / Objects joint session, we will also accept submissions outside of the overall theme for both sessions. Some suggestions of topics within the "emergency" theme: Strategies for mediation and prevention based on experiences with recovery Emergency Preparedness Planning Impact of heat or prolonged water exposure from a materials science point of view Impact of large scale climate change (drought, flooding), earthquakes, hurricanes, etc. on vulnerable historic sites Damage and disaster due to human causes: Theft, vandalism and terrorism Experiences in dealing with water damage, such as corrosion of metals, composite objects, lifting veneer and marquetry, warping due to drying, staining due to polluted water, and loss of decoration (gilding and veneer) Experiences in dealing with heat or fire damage, such as structural loss, charred surfaces, finish cleaning, and smoke odor Strategies for upholstery recovery (saving an upholstery's original foundation and fabric rather than documenting then disposing) Flooding of historic houses (floors, framing, mantles, etc.) Lessons learned from disaster Novel solutions to conservation, triage and recovery of the above Please share your knowledge by submitting your research, both from past and present experience. General Guidelines for Submission of Abstracts, and other information The deadline for submission of abstracts is Monday, September 14, 2015 Abstracts should be 500 words or less Include the presentation's title, authors name(s), professional titles, affiliations, and an author biography of no more than 300 words. In the case of multiple authors please list all authors and include an email address for each Conference presentations should be 20-25 minutes in length Presenters must submit their written papers to the WAG Postprints for publication no later than 8 weeks after the conference. We will provide the exact date after the conclusion of the conference Please note that while speakers are not compensated and must pay the conference registration fee (single day registration is available), financial assistance may be available for participants from abroad, in particular Latin-American scholars. Please inquire if you wish to apply for such assistance In addition to the WAG specialty and WAG/Objects joint specialty sessions, you may also submit your abstracts to the AIC's General Session and Poster Session Please indicate on the abstract the session(s) for which you want the paper to be considered. Please limit your choices to three sessions and rank them in order of preference.
