Call for Papers

AIC Wooden Artifacts Group (WAG)
and
Wooden Artifacts Group/Objects Specialty Group joint session
American Institute for Conservation ("AIC") Annual Meeting
Montreal, Canada
May 13-17, 2016

Overview: The Wooden Artifacts Group of the American Institute for
Conservation seeks submissions for papers to be presented at its
specialty session at the AIC Annual Conference to be held in
Montreal from May 13-17, 2016.

In addition to its general specialty session, WAG is pleased to
offer a joint session with the Objects Specialty Group. Given the
common ground between these two groups, it is sure to be a rich and
interesting exchange. Attendees may submit abstracts for the WAG
and/or joint specialty sessions.

The 2016 AIC Conference's overall theme is "Emergency! Preparing for
Disasters and Confronting the Unexpected in Conservation," an
exploration of lessons learned from past experience and strategies
for the future. While papers on the emergency theme are encouraged
for the WAG specialty session and the WAG / Objects joint session,
we will also accept submissions outside of the overall theme for
both sessions.

Some suggestions of topics within the "emergency" theme:

Strategies for mediation and prevention based on experiences
    with recovery

    Emergency Preparedness Planning

Impact of heat or prolonged water exposure from a materials
    science point of view

Impact of large scale climate change (drought, flooding),
earthquakes, hurricanes, etc. on vulnerable historic sites

Damage and disaster due to human causes: Theft, vandalism and
    terrorism

Experiences in dealing with water damage, such as corrosion of
metals, composite objects, lifting veneer and marquetry, warping
due to drying, staining due to polluted water, and loss of
    decoration (gilding and veneer)

Experiences in dealing with heat or fire damage, such as
structural loss, charred surfaces, finish cleaning, and smoke
    odor

Strategies for upholstery recovery (saving an upholstery's
original foundation and fabric rather than documenting then
    disposing)

Flooding of historic houses (floors, framing, mantles, etc.)

    Lessons learned from disaster

Novel solutions to conservation, triage and recovery of the
    above

Please share your knowledge by submitting your research, both from
past and present experience.
