The British Museum is running an Activity Programme in its new World
Conservation and Exhibition Centre, with the support of the Heritage
Lottery Fund.  This programme will include Behind the Scenes visits,
a community engagement programme called Object Journeys, a
Collections Skills Training Programme and a Conservation Live web
programme.  There is an exciting opportunity for a new WCEC Activity
Programme Conservator to contribute to the communication of
information about conservation and scientific research at the Museum
to the public, volunteers and participating partners.

Key areas of responsibility:

    To deliver content of the Behind the Scenes visits to
    Conservation and Scientific Research (CSR) studios and science
    laboratories in collaboration with the WCEC Activity Volunteer
    Advisor and staff of CSR.  You will also deliver training
    workshops to volunteers enabling them to deliver this programme

    To advise on conservation and science aspects during the
    development of the Object Journeys programme including working
    with external participants and curatorial staff in the selection
    of objects as well as providing condition assessments and
    practical conservation of objects for the programme

    To develop and deliver training workshops on preventive
    conservation for participants in the Collections Skills Training
    Programme

    To develop conservation and science web content for Conservation
    Live

    To review the effectiveness of the CSR contribution to the WCEC
    Activity Programme at regular intervals and to contribute to the
    overall assessment towards the end of the programme

Person Specification: The successful candidate will have
demonstrable practical skills and considerable experience.
Applicants will hold a recognised qualification in the conservation
of museum objects, and have experience post-qualification in the
conservation of museum objects as well as the application of
preventive conservation measures.  You will have a strong
understanding of conservation theory and ethical decision making and
a sound knowledge of all aspects of preventive conservation.  You
will be highly organised with excellent communication skills,
presentation skills and the ability to lead a team to deliver
outcomes to an agreed standard and time table.  Evidence of writing
skills or a publication record in an area of expertise is essential
for this post as is an awareness of Health and Safety issues.
