Storing videotape

One of the leading museums in Switzerland is refurbishing its
storage facilities and is wondering if there is any evidence that
demagnetizing the metal cabinets before use would do any good to
their video tape collection. I found "demagnetizing storage
cabinets" mentioned in several online publications but unfortunately
without any further information or scientific data nor any
references. In other publication it is mentioned that the normal
environment (not too near to electricity and magnets) is safe unless
you put your tapes directly on a loudspeaker or a TV set. Does
somebody have further information/data/evidence on this subject?
