The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is the national museum of the
Netherlands.  Its collection includes 1.1 million works of art and
objects from and about the Netherlands, spanning the period from the
Middle Ages up to and including the 20th century.  The Rijksmuseum
attracts some two millions visitors per year.  In April 2013 the
Rijksmuseum reopened to the public following a large-scale
restoration and renovation campaign, resulting in a breathtakingly
beautiful building, innovative layout and displays, spectacular
exhibitions, exciting events and various facilities catering to all
ages.

The Paintings Conservation Studio, which is part of the Conservation
and Scientific Research Department, is currently seeking a Junior
Conservator of Frames and Gilding

The Rijksmuseum has an established reputation in the specialist
field of the research and conservation of picture frames.  As part
of the aim to pass on our knowledge and experience to next
generations, we are inviting candidates to apply for the post of
junior conservator of frames and gilding.  The junior conservator
will work closely with the senior conservator of frames and gilding
within the museum's conservation studio for paintings and frames, in
the Atelier Building.  Candidates should be familiar with
traditional gilding techniques and modern approaches to the
conservation of gilded and polychromed surfaces and wooden objects.
Basic knowledge of picture frame styles and periods and an affinity
with easel paintings is desirable.

The Junior conservator will focus on picture frames and gilding.

The work will include the following activities:

    Monitoring the physical condition of the frames collection with
    a view to the early identification of risks and deterioration so
    that preventative measures can be taken in a timely fashion

    Conservation treatments, restoration and research of frames and
    framing methods

    Development of research, restoration and conservation methods
    for frames, including gilding, polychrome, veneer and other
    types of finishing

    Carrying out scientific analyses in collaboration with technical
    analysts and scientists; making descriptions of picture frames
    for condition reports, collection catalogues and documentation
    records

    Collaboration with fellow conservators, technicians, art
    handlers, scientists, registrars and curators regarding all
    aspects of loans, exhibition installation, preservation and
    management, reframing and research

    Keeping abreast of the latest developments in the field

Requirements

    Master's Degree in the field of conservation with a
    specialization in frames or a related discipline

    At least one year of demonstrable experience in the field of
    conservation, restoration and research of picture frames

    Ability to carry out restorations and to document the results

    Up to date knowledge of conservation, restoration and research
    methods

    Good verbal and visual reporting and documentation skills

    Good English language skills, both verbal and written

    Good Dutch language skills (or willingness to learn Dutch)

    Good social and communication skills

    Strong analytical and problem-solving ability

    Proactive attitude and focus on development

Terms of employment: The conservator will be appointed on a project
basis for the period of five years.  Subject to suitability this may
be followed by a permanent appointment.  Salary to be determined
depending on training and experience, with a minimum salary of Euro
2606 and a maximum salary of Euro 3,411 gross per month (scale 9)
based on full-time employment of 36 hours, excluding holiday
allowance and year-end bonus.  This appointment is subject to the
Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Museums.
