Call for Posters

"Architectural Iron and Steel in the 21st Century: Design and
Preservation of Contemporary and Historic Architecture"
Cambridge, Massachusetts.
April 2-3, 2016

This intensive, 2-day conference conference, organized by Technology
and Conservation, the MIT Department of Architecture's Building
Technology Program, and the Boston Society of Architects/AIA's
Historic Resources Committee, will be held on April 2-3, 2016 on the
MIT campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The focus of the conference will be on the design and use of cast
iron, wrought iron, and steel in the facades, structures, and
associated exterior components (such as gates and railings) of
historic and modern buildings. Attention also will be given to the
artistic utilization of these materials for sculpture and monuments.
Many advances in the manufacture and use of architectural iron and
steel as well as in the development of new types of steel have
occurred during recent years, and these exciting research and
implementation activities are continuing. The conference will
explore various aspects of performance, life cycle and
sustainability, fabrication developments, design improvements, and
new products, as well as construction techniques/ pitfalls, and
current conservation/ preservation methods. In addition, several
case histories will be presented detailing viable, cost-effective
approaches to the design and care of architecture and decorative
arts that incorporate iron and/or steel, as well as innovative
usages of stainless steel and other types of steel in structures and
building elements.

Poster presentations on a project or research involving performance,
detailing, specification, use, care, or repair of cast iron, wrought
iron, or steel are welcomed.

A poster presentation is one 30 inch x 40 inch board or two 20 inch
x 30 inch boards showing project and/or research information
relevant to the conference subject matter: exteriors of contemporary
and/or historic/traditional buildings/structures, associated
exterior components, or artistic works which utilize iron or steel
in their construction.

An area will be set aside during the conference for the display of
posters and discussion.

Poster proposals should be submitted by December 30, 2015 to
