The British Museum is currently recruiting for a Scientist to work
within the department of Conservation and Scientific Research.  The
role will involve responsibility for research and investigation of
the deterioration, conservation and technology both of organic
colorants and of polymeric/modern materials in the collections of
the British Museum.  The post-holder will be expected to contribute
to the management and development of in-house analytical facilities
for research of these materials and will be required to disseminate
results and information through reports, publication and lecturing
etc. and participation in public outreach events.

Key areas of responsibility:

    To undertake research and development relating to the analysis
    of organic colorants and paint media as required for fulfilment
    of the Museum's research commitments under the EU-funded
    IPERION-CH project

    To provide specialist scientific expertise for polymeric and
    modern organic materials to support conservation activity
    associated with the move of the Africa, Oceania and Americas
    collections to the World Conservation and Exhibition Centre
    (WCEC collections move)

    To develop one or more new projects in these specialist areas
    aligned with the Museum and CSR research strategies including
    development of research grant or other funding applications and
    collaborations with external museum or HE partners where
    appropriate

    To participate, when required, in the analysis of materials and
    provide advice in response to conservation and curatorial
    enquiry or as part of research, contract or other activities

    To be a member of multi-disciplinary project teams (curators,
    conservators and scientists) investigating the technology,
    deterioration, storage and conservation of museum objects and
    related materials, with a focus on polymeric/modern organic
    materials and organic colorants

Person Specification: The ideal candidate will have a strong and
relevant science background combined with experience in analysis of
organic colorants (especially natural dyes) and polymeric/modern
materials (e.g. plastics, adhesives, paper and textiles) using a
range of analytical techniques such as: LC-MS, FT-IR, nIR, py-GC-MS,
XRF, SEM-EDX.  A strong interest or experience in the technology and
conservation of museum objects would be an advantage.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work
independently and to meet deadlines, good organisational skills with
close attention to detail and strong team working ability.  Good
verbal and written communication skills are essential.
