Junior Conservator of Furniture Rijksmuseum Amsterdam 36 hours per week The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is the National Museum of the Netherlands. Its collection includes 1.1 million works of art and objects from the Netherlands, European and Asian countries, spanning the period from the Middle Ages up to the 21th century. The Rijksmuseum attracts over two million visitors per year. It reopened to the public in April 2013 after a large-scale renovation campaign. This resulted in a breathtakingly beautiful building, innovative layout and displays, spectacular exhibitions, exciting events and various facilities catering to all ages. The Furniture Conservation Studio, which is part of the Conservation and Scientific Research Department, is currently seeking a Junior Conservator of Furniture The Rijksmuseum has an established reputation in the specialist field of the research and conservation of furniture. As part of the aim to pass on our knowledge and experience to next generations, we are inviting candidates to apply for the post of Junior conservator of furniture. The junior conservator will work in the Ateliergebouw within the team of furniture conservators, consisting of the head of the department, a senior furniture conservator, a PhD in climate research, a ship model conservator and one or two interns. Candidates should be familiar with modern approaches to research into, and conservation of furniture and wooden objects, as well as possessing cabinet-making skills. The Junior conservator will focus on the conservation of furniture and wooden objects and will participate in current research projects such as Climate4Wood and transparent historic furniture finishes. The work will include the following activities: Conservation treatments and research of furniture Monitoring the physical condition of the furniture collection with a view to the early identification of risks and deterioration so that preventive measures can be taken in a timely fashion Scientific analyses in collaboration with technical analysts and scientists Collaboration with fellow conservators, curators, technicians, art handlers, scientists, registrars, as well as visitors Keeping abreast of the latest developments in the field Requirements Master's or equivalent degree in the field of furniture conservation At least one year of demonstrable experience in the field of furniture conservation Ability to carry out conservation treatments and to document the results Up to date knowledge of conservation and research methods Good verbal and visual reporting and documentation skills Good English language skills, both verbal and written Good Dutch language skills (or willingness to learn Dutch) Candidate profile Conscientious and principled approach to the ethical and aesthetic considerations surrounding conservation Excellent manual skills Good social and communication skills Strong analytical and problem-solving ability Pro-active attitude and focus on development Terms of employment: The conservator will be appointed for the period of one year, with the possibility of a maximum extension with one year. Salary to be determined depending on training and experience, with a minimum salary of Euro2,606 and a maximum salary of Euro3,411 gross per month (scale 9) based on full-time employment of 36 hours, excluding holiday allowance and year-end bonus. This appointment is subject to the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Museums.
