"Protection of Cultural Heritage and Illicit Trade of Cultural Goods
in a National and International Context"
Heidelberg University
October 4-9, 2015

The Heidelberg Center for the Cultural Heritage presents the 2nd
HCCH International Summer School "Protection of Cultural Heritage
and Illicit Trade of Cultural Goods in a National and International
Context"

The uncontrolled excavation and the illicit traffic of cultural
goods is currently gaining a lot of attention: Scientists report
from Syria and Iraq on the looting and destruction of cultural sites
and large German museums are faced with claims for restitution.
This topic is thus of great actuality and highly relevant for many
different scientific disciplines and it includes on account of its
global significance, a distinctive transcultural aspect.

The planned Summer School on will take place at Heidelberg
University October 4-9, 2015. It will bring together scientists,
experts and doctoral students to discuss this significant and highly
topical issue. The event will comprehensively cover cultural,
historical, social, economic, legal and criminological aspects.
Based on the situation in Germany, the Summer School will then focus
on the international interrelations. It will address the situation
in the Middle East and Italy and also focus on international
connections on the art and antiques market.

The Heidelberg Center for the Cultural Heritage together with other
research institutions, museums and renowned experts from the field
of archaeology, criminology, law and history will hereby provide an
important stimulus on a subject that is scarcely mentioned in the
regular academic curriculum. The involvement of experts from other
disciplines as guest speaker guarantees the high scientific level as
well as an important practical impact. The event will be completed
by visits to museums and archaeological institutions to discuss the
matter on the spot. Finally, the participants themselves will
contribute to the success of the Summer School through their own
presentations.
