Subject: Frame finish policies
I am on a search for any standards or policies conservators or museums may have regarding the specifics of the finishes used on frames. Our museum has repeatedly ran into issues finding satisfactory frames for enormous works on paper. We find ourselves in the need to frame works that are in the 10 foot x 5 foot range and larger. Common frame stocks are often insubstantial and we have developed a frame profile with a local mill to begin producing our own larger frames. I'm finding it difficult to pin down what finishes are going to be the most practical for a museum. Art frame producers are tight lipped about what they use. Finishes are completed long before they ever reach museums and are seemingly presumed acceptable. We want to use the safest finish process for works on paper we can if we are going to be making that decision ourselves. Does anyone have any experience with specifying frame finishes for works on paper and paintings or have any standards they may already use?
