Masters courses on Cultural Heritage Management and
Conservation of Decorative Architectural Surfaces
University of Malta

The University of Malta, Department of Conservation and Built
Heritage, is offering two full time Masters Courses starting in
October 2015.  The courses will be dealing with Cultural Heritage
Management and the Conservation of Decorative Architectural Surfaces
(Stone and Wall Paintings) respectively.The MA in Cultural Heritage
Management should attract graduates with a first degree in history,
archaeology, history of art, conservation, education or related
disciplines, wishing to acquire and develop the specialised
knowledge and skills to become practitioners in cultural heritage,
especially in the Mediterranean region.The MSc in the Conservation
of Decorative Architectural Surfaces will be of relevance to
graduates in archaeology, history of art, chemistry, biology,
physics, architecture or engineering wishing to specialise in
conservation and to make it their career.

    MSc in Conservation of Decorative Architectural Surfaces

        A one-year Preparatory Programme, starting in October 2015,
        is designed specifically to prepare students to commence the
        MSc in Conservation of Decorative Architectural Surfaces
        opening the following year (October 2016).  It will give
        students coming from a humanities background the opportunity
        to familiarise themselves with science-based topics, and
        conversely, students from a science background the
        opportunity to familiarise themselves with arts-based
        subjects.  This is followed by a two-year multidisciplinary
        course dealing with the conservation of decorative
        architectural surfaces (including wall paintings, stone, and
        mosaics).  The programme will contain an equal balance of
        theoretical and practical subjects, carried out both
        throughout the academic years and as summer placements.  A
        dissertation will be researched and written in the final
        year of the course.

    MA in Cultural Heritage Management

        This is an interdisciplinary programme aimed at persons
        working as heritage managers, or wishing to enter this
        field.  The course draws on expertise across the university
        and beyond to provide a sound formation in the mediation of
        contemporary issues concerning cultural heritage resources,
        and practical skills that will help participants become
        effective leaders in this field.  The programme includes
        taught units, a dissertation and a 4-week summer work
        placement.  Seminars and group discussions form an important
        component of the programme.
