"Conservation of Cultural Heritage: Challenges and Reviews"
Athens
25-29 May 2015

In celebration of its 50 years of conservation service and 30 years
of conservation education and training within the Hellenic Ministry
of Culture, Education, and Religious Affairs, you are cordially
invited by its organizers, the Directorate of Conservation of
Ancient and Modern Monuments (DCAMM) and the Department of
Conservation of Antiquities and Works of Art, TEI of Athens to
participate in the conference: Conservation of Cultural Heritage:
Challenges and Reviews. The conference will take place in Athens,
Greece, from 25-29 May 2015, at Technopolis and the Acropolis
Museum.

This collaborative conference celebrates the 50 years from the
establishment of the central Conservation Department in the Greek
Archaeological Service and the 30 years from the establishment of
the Department of Conservation of Antiquities and Works of Art at
the T.E.I. of Athens, the first department for conservation studies
at a higher education level in Greece.

The aim of the conference is to disseminate and promote the progress
in the field of conservation, its structures, scientists and
professionals, as well as the frontiers of theory, research and
practitioner approaches in Greece. Furthermore, it attempts to
bring into discussion the current issues and future prospects of
conservation as an interdisciplinary field with fundamental role in
the preservation and promotion of the cultural heritage of our
country.

This is the first time that these two major institutions in the area
of culture and education line up their efforts to organize a
conference in conservation, which we hope to become a key milestone
for the field. The conference aspires to create a dialogue between
academics and practitioners from both public and private
institutions and organisations in order to discuss current
challenges and future trends in conservation

The conference will host 66 oral and 70 poster presentations in
Greek and English, as well as parallel activities such as
presentation of the conservation works on the Horologion of
Andronikos Kyrristos monument by the Conservation Department of the
Ephorate of Antiquities of Athens, guided tour of the Acropolis
Museum regarding conservation and restoration issues and
demonstration of the laser cleaning method, guided tour of the
Byzantine and Christian Museum storage areas, as well as
presentation of the former Royal collection of Tatoi Palace and
Daphni Monastery conservation-restoration projects. In addition,
analytical techniques for the study and preservation of works of art
will be demonstrated in DCAMM and NCSRD DEMOKRITOS laboratories.

Keynote speeches will be delivered in each thematic session by
professionals and academics, from Greece and abroad, with
distinguished presence in their respective field. Finally, the
conference will be followed by a "Student session", consisting of 12
oral and 16 poster presentations, which will give current students
and recent graduates or undergraduates a premier opportunity to
present their dissertations dealing with the general theme of the
conference.

The conference will also be broadcasted online, and live streaming
will be available to users at
