Assistant Conservation Officer
Treasures of the Brotherton Project
Library
University of Leeds

Job ref: CSLIB1029

This is a full time (35 hours per week), fixed-term post available
for two years, provided as part of the University Library's
Treasures of the Brotherton project, supported by the Heritage
Lottery Fund.

Working under the direction of the Conservation Officer, you will
support the development of the Library's new Special Collections
exhibition gallery, its exhibition programme and the associated
training and volunteer opportunities. In addition you will be
responsible for the supervision of a trainee Conservation
Technician. You will devise and deliver other aspects of the
project's activity programme as appropriate (eg Conservation
Masterclasses). Following established conservation standards and
procedures, you will assist the Special Collections Team in
establishing a suitable balance between preservation and display
requirements, and devise and oversee the implementation of
appropriate preventive and interventive procedures to deliver the
exhibitions programme. You will also help deliver the Library's
broader Collections Care Strategy.

Holding a postgraduate or other relevant professional qualification
or equivalent experience in rare book and/or paper conservation, you
will have some practical experience of working as a professional in
the field, and demonstrate a commitment to CPD. PACR (Professional
Accreditation of Conservator-Restorers) accreditation will be an
advantage. A confident user of IT, you will have excellent
interpersonal and communications skills, able to contribute
positively to a team, to develop and deliver training, and to
deliver workshops and talks as part of a public engagement
programme. Self-managing, you will be able to work under pressure
to deadlines whilst maintaining standards and accuracy.

Experience of working on an exhibition programme of books and
archives would be an advantage, as would supervisory experience of
trainees and/or volunteers.

NB. The nature of conservation work necessitates working with
materials that may be dusty or mouldy, in low temperature or low
light environments, and lifting and handling of heavy or awkward
materials. Protective equipment and training will be provided.

Attendance at events outside core hours eg, Saturdays and early
evenings is also a requirement.

Closing date: Friday, 8 May 2015
Expected interview date: Wednesday, 20 May 2015
