The following is on behalf of a friend, Christian Skeel, who is an
artist. He has created a paint mixing tool and would like to know
if this tool would be helpful for conservators. Below is also his
presentation

Colour mixing tool for conservators

I am interested to know if the colour mixing tool described below is
useful for conservators and if so which colour brands would be
useful to have in the system?

New Tool for artists and conservators

PaintMaker is an online paint mixing service where you can calculate
paint recipes from RGB values. The intention with the paint mixing
service has been to create an easy to use precision tool for people
who work professionally with colors every day--originally artists.
However a number of conservators have started using the service
recently. And we so have added Gamblin Conservation Colors to
PaintMaker.

The system, which is completely accurate, is based on mathematics
developed by Kubelka and Munk in 1931 to calculate complex pigment
mixtures. The calculating program used on

    <URL:http://sensuallogic.com/paintmaker/OnlinePaintMixer.html>

is developed by Zsolt Kovacs, Professor of Electronics, Department
of Information Engineering, University of Brescia. The colour
mappings and measuring are made by a number of contributors from
around the world. PaintMaker is developed by Thomas Scheel, Anders
Lehmann and Christian Skeel.

The system works as follows:

Take a picture of the painting you wish to work on and colour
correct it to make sure that the colours are presented correctly,
upload it to PaintMaker. Choose witch colour brand that you are
going to use in your painting. On the uploaded photo mark the
colour that you want to recreate and PaintMaker will suggest three
recipes for creating the specific colour. It is very easy and quick.

The colour mixing recipes can be obtained both by volume and by
weight. In weight mode the paint amount is measured according to
canvas size. (the Gamblin colours haven't got the weight option
since the colours are impossible to weigh)

PaintMaker is web based and can be used on all platforms (Windows,
MAC, etc.). If you are a registered member PaintMaker remember your
settings from session to session and across all platforms.

The service is free at the moment but will in a few months cost $ 4
for 100 recipes. There is no time limitation on credits. One can
thereby use a few recipes a month and thus have recipes for several
years, or one can use many recipes a day.

To date the system can mix the following colour brands:

    Golden (acrylic)
    Rembrandt (oil)
    Gamblin Conservation Colours
    Liquitex (acrylic)

I would like to know if there are other colour brands that would be
useful to have in the system? It takes 6-12 months to map and
introduce a full set so only the more used brand are considered.

I hope this is a tool that you will find useful.
