Managing Editor, AATA Online The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), located in Los Angeles, California, and one of the operating programs of the J. Paul Getty Trust, works internationally to advance conservation practice in the visual arts, broadly interpreted to include objects, collections, architecture, and sites. The GCI serves the conservation community through scientific research, education and training, model field projects, and the broad dissemination of the results of both its own work and the work of others in the field. In all its endeavors, the GCI focuses on the creation and dissemination of knowledge that will benefit the professionals and organizations responsible for the conservation of the world's cultural heritage. The GCI is seeking a Managing Editor to play a key role in developing and controlling the editorial content of AATA Online, Abstracts of International Conservation Literature. AATA Online is a comprehensive database of abstracts of literature related to the preservation and conservation of material cultural heritage. A major reference work for the conservation field-managed and published by the GCI since 1985-has been freely available online since 2002. Updated quarterly, AATA Online adds approximately 4,000 new records to the resource annually. Please see: <URL:http://aata.getty.edu> Major responsibilities: Reporting to the Manager of the GCI's Information Center and working in collaboration with Getty program staff members, the Managing Editor will manage the core list of publications covered by AATA Online to ensure comprehensive coverage of the conservation literature; engage with external section subject specialists to ensure scope and coverage continues to reflect current research; oversee creation of records in the Getty Abstracting and Indexing Application (GAIA) production system for original and published abstracts and new authorities for author, corporate bodies, geographic locations, and other bibliographic information; serve as lead copy editor of abstracts from various sources following standard bibliographic practice and the AATA in-house style guide; and collect and assign the literature to be abstracted, copy edited, indexed and/or reviewed by contract abstractors and editors, metadata specialist, section subject specialists, and volunteers. Qualifications: Candidate must have a master's degree in information science, conservation, science, art history, or a related field and a minimum of 2-3 years of relevant experience, preferably including 1 to 2 years as a copy editor working in an art or scientific literature abstracting and indexing environment. They must also have advance-level facility with systems designed for data management, ability to meet deadlines, and apply policies and procedures consistently. Additionally, must have experience with the editorial process and knowledge to evaluate copy editing and proofreading skills, facility using a wide range of online and print resources, and reading knowledge of or familiarity with one or more European languages. Candidate should be able to collaborate effectively with a wide range of colleagues in an interdisciplinary work environment and must possess excellent communication and presentation skills. The position also requires a candidate who is organized, detail oriented, and able to set priorities and juggle competing demands.
