Doctoral studentships (2 positions) The Centre for Doctoral Training Science and Engineering in Arts, Heritage and Archaeology at UCL, University of Oxford and University of Brighton is delighted to be offering two exceptionally exciting doctoral studentships: "Developing preventive conservation strategies for 'problem stones': Reigate Stone at the Tower of London" <URL:http://www.seaha-cdt.ac.uk/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/P24-Project-Advert-FINAL.pdf> This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the conservation of historic stonework at the major London monuments of the Tower of London and Hampton Court Palace. The doctoral project will learn from past experience in order to produce holistic conservation strategies for the future--enabling the student to develop a wide range of scientific and practical skills in the diagnosis and treatment of material deterioration. The scholarship will be supervised jointly by the University of Oxford School of Geography and the Environment, Historic Royal Palaces, and Carden and Godfrey Architects. Application Deadline: 15 May 2015 "Strain modelling in historical tapestries" <URL:http://www.seaha-cdt.ac.uk/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/P1-2015-Advert-FINAL2.pdf> This studentship will investigate cutting edge real-time in-situ tri-axial strain monitoring sensors to provide data to inform analytical modelling of tapestries using Finite Elements and explicit mathematical formulations together with modern Dynamic Equilibrium methods used in fabric simulations. The project will be jointly supervised by the UCL Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage, Historic Royal Palaces and IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. Application Deadline: Open until filled.
