The Smithsonian American Art Museum is seeking an objects
conservator to work in the conservation department for a period of 3
months.  Funding has been made available from the Smithsonian
Women's Committee for a position which is the equivalent to a GS 9
position which includes benefits.

The main focus of the position will be the examination and
conservation of Duane Hanson's Woman Eating in the galleries of the
American Art Museum.  This project will be carried out with staff
from the conservation department.  The project will be a
collaboration between conservation, curatorial and education
departments.

The conservator will document the condition of the sculpture and
conduct research into the materials Hanson used for Woman Eating.
The objects conservator will conduct the treatment as part of a
small team working on public view in the galleries.  The conservator
hired will be responsible for creating didactic materials for the
galleries and museum website and for working with the Curatorial and
Education Department to develop public programs about the
conservation work being done.

The conservator will participate in all departmental activities
including meetings and any special programs at the Lunder
Conservation Center.

Desired qualifications:

    Master's degree from a recognized conservation training program
    with a specialization in objects conservation.

    Professional knowledge of preservation theory and standards of
    conservation practice

    Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills,
    demonstrating an ability to work in a group environment

    Computer proficiency to facilitate digital capture and
    management of documentary images and information

    Strong organizational abilities

Appointment:

    Position should start in the Fall, 2015

    6 hour days over 3 months

    Non-federal, Trust appointment at IS-19, $25.24/hour (equivalent
    to $52,667 on annual scale)
