Subject: Position at the Hamilton Kerr Institute
Departmental Administrator Hamilton Kerr Institute, Whittlesford Fitzwilliam Museum UKP27,057 - UKP32,277 The Hamilton Kerr Institute (HKI) is a Department of the Fitzwilliam Museum, and a teaching faculty within the History of Art Department of the University, situated in the village of Whittlesford (8 miles south of Cambridge). With a staff of up to fifteen, up to ten students and interns, and on occasion extra contract staff or volunteers delivering specific services, the Institute teaches the three-year Postgraduate Diploma in the Conservation of Easel Paintings and accepts post-programme interns (who have already obtained a Masters from other institutions), for up to two years of advanced training and research. The Institute accepts on average two Diploma students biennially, and offers up to six post-programme internships a year, and there may also be a number of PhD candidates or other researcher-grade staff at various times. The annual teaching period is longer than normal University terms, taking up 45 weeks of the year, split into three 15 week terms, with a week's break at Christmas, a week at Easter and five weeks in the summer. The HKI also provides a conservation service to the Museum, treating easel paintings from the Department of Paintings, Drawings and Prints (PDP), as well as painted objects from other departments of the museum when required. It also undertakes the conservation of easel paintings and their preventive conservation for a wide range of other clients including the National Trust and the Royal Collection, as well as other Cambridge University departments and Colleges, and museums and collections outside Cambridge. The role holder advises the Director in all aspects of management and financial organisation, handles all confidential matters of the Institute, develops systems and undertakes project management for the conservation treatments and projects undertaken by the Institute, and is the registrar for students and interns, as well as the Human Resources representative. Two staff members, and any volunteers, report to the role holder. Due to the diversity, scope and level of responsibility of the role, the job is very demanding, and requires a pro-active and flexible approach to problem solving, and excellent organisational and communication skills. The Institute, being a small establishment at a distance from Cambridge, fosters a close collegiate atmosphere and the role of the Administrator is pivotal in fostering a team spirit and close working relationships among both staff and students. Offers of employment will be conditional upon the satisfactory outcome of a Basic Disclosure check via Disclosure Scotland. Whether an outcome is satisfactory will be determined by the University.
