Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in Conservation Education UCLA University of California/Getty Program in Conservation of Archaeological and Ethnographic Materials (UCLA in Los Angeles, CA) is seeking a conservator to fill a nine and half month teaching fellowship from September 15, 2015 through June 30, 2016, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The fellowship offers exceptional professional development opportunities for those interested in conservation education, as well as opportunities for conducting research about diversifying participation in conservation and collections care. Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in teaching, excellent communication skills, and a strong demonstrated interest in diversity. At least three years of post-graduate work experience in conservation is preferred. Applicants should demonstrate specialization within the conservation of archaeological and/or ethnographic materials. Responsibilities will include: Observing classes within the UCLA/Getty graduate conservation first year graduate core curriculum <URL:http://conservation.ucla.edu/content/class-schedule> in order to gain exposure to techniques of course delivery. Meeting regularly with Prof. Ellen Pearlstein about both teaching and targeted research described below, and with faculty in the UCLA/Getty Program in the Conservation of Archaeological and Ethnographic Materials to develop materials and skills for teaching. Offering lectures and practical exercises in the candidate's area of specialization within the UCLA/Getty graduate conservation first year curriculum. Connecting with directors and faculty at each of the graduate programs of the Association of North American Graduate Programs in Conservation (ANAGPIC) to explore what is currently being done to inform underrepresented students about conservation and collections care. Reviewing various UCLA diversity initiatives to explore possible partnerships. Connecting with staff working in Los Angeles on Mellon's national diversity program for curators to examine whether this model might serve initiatives developed for conservation and collections care. Connecting with staff at the Getty Multicultural internship program and reviewing the program self-survey to examine this model. The fellow will be expected to review and analyze allied diversity initiatives in order to draft a publishable report critically reviewing value of these models for increasing participation of underrepresented communities in conservation and collections care. The fellowship will provide a stipend of $38,000 plus benefits, and $ 5000 in support of meetings and/or conference travel to further research objectives.
