ICON Ethnography event and group Annual General Meeting

    Japanese Tissue Showcase
UCL Institute of Archaeology, room 209
    31-34 Gordon Square
    London WC1H 0PY
    Saturday 25 April
    11am - 5pm

Japanese tissue has been used extensively in the conservation of
ethnographic and cultural artefacts, as a material for filling,
backing and facing. To celebrate this versatile material, the ICON
Ethnography group is hosting an informal one-day showcase event of
talks, live demonstrations and discussion. The morning and early
afternoon sessions will contain exciting talks covering a wide range
of uses across multiple conservation fields. The cost of the day is
UKP5.00 and while lunch is not provided, refreshments will be
offered during the afternoon break. During this afternoon break, we
also invite Ethnography group members to participate in a short AGM.
Live demonstrations of applied techniques will follow the AGM and
provide opportunity for more informal discussions. Posters on the
use of Japanese tissue will also be displayed.

Techniques and uses represented on the day include:

    Barkcloth repair
    Pulping for leather repair
    Infill for porcupine quill
    General uses and history
    Uses in Natural History
    Backing on ivory
    Cedar bark repair
    Basketry repair
    Gap-fill for feather loss

Live practical demonstrations include:

    Paper fur
    Butterfly wing repair
    Embossed tissue fills
Preparing beaten kozo paper for use
    Tissue supported butt joins
    Tissue covered plastazote

We hope you can join us for a diverse and informal event that we
hope will inspire discussions throughout the day and future
conservation practice.
