Project Conservator

The Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) is currently
seeking a full-time Project Conservator for eight-months to complete
a grant-funded project. The position reports to the Senior
Conservator. The position is available immediately.

The Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary holds the foremost
collection of Judaica and Hebraica in the Western Hemisphere,
including manuscripts, rare printed books, periodicals, ephemeral
materials, musical scores, sound recordings, moving images, graphic
arts, and archives. It provides access to subscription databases and
to its digital collections. The JTS Library serves the students and
faculty of the institution in addition to the international
community of scholars in Jewish studies and related areas. Please

Position Summary: The full-time Project Conservator will be
responsible for the systematic treatment of items in serious state
of deterioration from the Library's Special Collections. This
project is for the treatment of manuscript fragments on paper and
parchment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

    Treat objects in critical need of conservation

    Implementation of workflow for treatment of a large quantity of
    fragments

    Preparation of treatment reports

    Work with librarians and conservators to prepare documents for
    digitization

Requirements:

    Graduate degree in conservation with a specialty in paper
    conservation

    Minimum one year of post-graduate conservation experience, with
    demonstrated experience in performing treatment of rare
    materials on paper and parchment

    In-depth knowledge of papermaking and parchment

    Working knowledge of material sciences

    Excellent organizational and teamwork skills

    Excellent oral and written communication skills, including
    demonstrated ability to document treatments, and the ability to
    prepare reports

    The candidate should be legally able to work in the U.S.
