Art Restoration Workshop
Fresco and Canvas
June 11 -28, 2015

The workshop will include the practices of conservation and
restoration of fresco, canvas and statuary (wood, papier-mache,
etc.). The session will begin with an introduction, practical
hands-on experience, excursions and lectures. After
introductions which are common to all areas, participants may
choose a specific area of focus. There are no prerequisites
required to participate to this workshop. The frescoes that
will be worked on and studied are part of the rupestral
settlements (underground habitations) located in the Alta Murgia
area. Statues and canvases are provided by local churches and
private collections. The session provides a practical focus,
allowing students ample opportunity for participation in
restoration technique and creation ex-novo. By learning and
actively working, participants also contribute to the
conservation of the rich art and historical heritage of the
region. The workshop is complimented by seminars in Art
History, Geomorphological Studies and Religious Iconography and
Rituals. The courses also include several site visits,
including visits to Sassi of Matera (Unesco World Heritage
site), the Rupestral Churches Park, museums and art exhibitions.

Sustainable Preservation Project
Fornello
July 24 - August 4, 2015

Fornello is a site made up of a Byzantine fresco cave, 12
additional cave dwellings and evidence of a settlement dating to
the 3rd century B.C. The future goal for the site of Fornello
is to create a sustainable conservation model through the
complete restoration of the historical landscape and the
frescoes, highlighting the importance of the site by converging
interests, energies and actions toward the preservation of the
original settlement as well as promoting sustainable living
practices. Also, the project aims to support and promote the
local agro-pastoral community, the history and the heritage of
the local food culture practices, strongly bound to the
geomorphological characteristics and climate of the region.
Participants will work hands-on to stabilize cave entrances and
skylights, learn the art of dry-stone-wall techniques to
reconstruct the site's stone walls. They will be introduced to
the practices of fresco restoration and the history of Byzantine
frescoes. During the work session participants will be given
instruction on archeological methods, techniques and
documentation while operating in an historical site. Time at
Fornello will be scheduled in half days (4 hours), alternately
with lectures, guided visits to historical towns and sites, and
insights on the traditional culinary culture for the other half
    of the days.
