Subject: Saad Eskander leaves Iraq National Library
I forward this message from Charles E. Jones: "I bring news, with his permission, that Dr. Saad Eskander is no longer the Director General of the Iraq National Library and Archives. As Director of the Library, Dr. Eskander and the staff he directed worked tirelessly and under terribly difficult circumstances to rebuild the INLA in the period following the collapse of the Saddam regime and the catastrophic looting and arson it suffered at that time. Under his guidance the library embraced the idea of a new democratic, federal and multi-cultural Iraq, rejected censorship, and built a strong and effective network of national and international colleagues and institutions. As the Director of the Library he was a huge force for good in Iraq and the international library community". All of us heard recent news in cultural heritage destruction in Syria and Iraq lately. But if you read works like "A Universal History of Books Destruction" you will see the history is deeper and longer. In any case, I encourage all of you that where not subscribed to the Iraq Crisis diffusion list to do it here: <URL:https://lists.uchicago.edu/web/subscribe/iraqcrisis> Mauro J.
