Position at Dorset History Centre

From: Sam Johnston <archives<-at->
Date: Monday, February 23, 2015
Conservation Officer (22.2 hours per week)
Dorset History Centre

Salary details: UKP15,775 - UKP18,106
Job term: Part Time
Appointment type: Permanent
Location: Dorchester, Dorset, UK

The Dorset History Centre (DHC) is seeking an experienced archive
conservator to join an innovative and enthusiastic team to carry out
conservation for this local authority archive service.

You will work closely with the Archivists and Collections Assistant
together with a team of volunteers to care for the wide range of
collections held at DHC. Materials include parchment and paper as
well as film, sound, photographic and digital archives. You will
develop and encourage volunteering in preservation and conservation
activities and will support and nurture volunteer skills which will
contribute to the conservation function at DHC.

DHC is awaiting the result (in June 2015) of a Stage 2 application
to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in relation to the project "Home
and Abroad: Opening up the Archive of the Bankes Family of Kingston
Lacy"

Integral to the project, which has secured a further grant from the
National Manuscripts Conservation Trust, is a significant
preservation and conservation element. If this HLF application is
successful it may be possible to offer an additional 2 days (0.4)
per week on an 18 month fixed term contract for this element of the
project until early 2017.

A key service objective for the Conservation Officer is to explore
external funding potential for the conservation function at DHC. It
is intended that DHC can fund extra hours for the post on an
on-going basis through income generation. The County Archivist and
Principal Archivist will provide support in developing this
entrepreneurial element of the role.

You must have a recognised post graduate qualification in paper
conservation. Experience in reprographics and/or digitisation,
environmental management and archive cataloguing software,
preferably CALM, are desirable. Good time management and the
ability to prioritise will be essential in addition to working well
in a team and with volunteers.
