Organic Chemist Rathgen Research Laboratory Job reference: SMB-RF-1-2014 The Rathgen Research Laboratory, which forms part of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin - Preussischer Kulturbesitz, is currently seeking to fill as soon as possible a permanent position for an Organic Chemist The position is graded at grade 13 TVoD (Collective Agreement for the German public service). The Rathgen Research Laboratory is the leading institution for art technology, archaeometry and conservation science at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. It carries out investigations on a broad variety of materials within the museum collections and focuses its research on scientific issues related to art and archaeological objects in close cooperation with curators, archaeologists, conservation scientists and conservators. It carries forward the tradition of the world's oldest scientific museum laboratory, the Chemical Laboratory of the Royal Museums in Berlin, which was founded on April 1, 1888 and bears today the name of its first director, Friedrich Rathgen. Main activities/Responsibilities: The successful applicant will be able to apply advanced knowledge of scientific research as it relates to organic substances within the collection of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. She/he will work closely with scientists, conservators and curators across interdisciplinary lines in an extremely diversified and intellectually stimulating collection environment. It is also expected from the candidate to keep a good and close working relationship with the technical staff and members of other departments. She/he will examine works of art, perform analyses, interpret results using and maintaining the specialized equipment of the laboratory and document of the results in written reports. She/he will take part in the development and application for research grants with internal and external partners, prepares proposals for research projects with a focus on organic chemistry and realise research projects. The applicant will document und publish scientific results. She/he will ensure quality management and work out concepts for the public awareness of scientific results. She/he will supervise and guide technical staff, interns and visiting scholars and will play an important part in the development of a high-quality, scientifically based research and advisory service. Requirements: Completed graduate studies in the field of chemistry or a related field Well funded knowledge of organic substances, natural and synthetic materials Profound knowledge testified by scientific publications of the analytical techniques in the field of organic chemistry (infrared and Raman spectroscopy, gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry among others) Up-to-date knowledge of organic trace, analytical procedures and sample preparation Experience in performing national and international research projects A minimum of three years' practical experience in scientific research Experience in the areas of conservation science and/or art technology and/or archaeometry is desirable Strong verbal/writing communication skills as well as experience and interest in teamwork in an interdisciplinary environment Excellent IT knowledge, especially concerning spectrum evaluation procedure Very good written and oral knowledge of German and English Desired skills PhD in the field of chemistry or a related field Experience in teamwork with scientists, conservators and curators in cultural facilities Basic knowledge of a foreign language The Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz is an equal opportunities employer as set out by Bundesgleichstellungsgesetz (Federal Equal Opportunities Act).
