Subject: Project partners sought to test new methodology for optimizing mechanical systems
Project partners needed to test a new methodology for optimization of mechanical systems The Image Permanence Institute is looking for three motivated project partners to work with us on a project funded by an IMLS National Leadership Grant for Libraries. Participation is limited to non-federal institutions in the United States. Our goal is to produce a comprehensive guide to planning and implementing energy-saving mechanical system operations that have little to no impact on collection storage environments. These strategies have proven successful in a variety of collecting institutions when implemented with expert guidance from IPI and our energy-management consultants at Herzog/Wheeler and Associates. In this field test, partner institutions will use and test a written guide to the documentation, data gathering and analysis, experimentation, implementation and maintenance of a sustainable preservation environment. IPI will provide the draft methodology which project partners will test in a controlled situation with IPI guidance. Ongoing participation and input from a team of staff at partner institutions is essential to the success of this project. Partner experiences and suggestions are critical to preparing the final version of a written methodology to be used in the field of preservation and environmental management. Throughout the course of the project partners will receive access to IPI's Environmental Consulting advice and expertise, a subscription to IPI's eClimateNotebook(r) web-based environmental management system, 18 PEM2(r) data loggers and a flash drive (equipment and services worth nearly $50,000), PLUS the potential for significant energy savings. Project partners must be highly motivated and equipped to carry out the work through the course of the project. Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible: The institution must be a library, archive, or a cultural institution with a library or archive as a significant part of their structure in the United States The building must use an air handling system to condition a collections environment for preservation purposes (up to two systems per institution will be included) A minimum of two years of current (collected between 2013 and the present) environmental data collected from collection spaces served by the selected air handling systems must be available and accessible The selected air handling systems cannot have undergone energy efficiency commissioning in the past two years One facilities and one collections care staff must be willing to commit to active, ongoing participation for a minimum of one day per month each over the span of the project (April 2015 through September 2016), plus up to four days during each of three onsite visits during the project. Participation and endorsement by administrative staff will also be necessary Partners will be responsible for data collection from mechanical systems and storage locations and for monthly team meetings that IPI will participate in remotely Applications must be received by March 15, 2015.
