The conference is part of the project 'Bibliotheca Italica Manuscripta (BIM): describing, documenting and promoting medieval manuscripts in Italy", a research of relevant national interest within the PRIN 2010-2011 programme. The Scientific Committee is composed of the following members: Flavia De Rubeis, Paolo Eleuteri, Nicoletta Giove, Cesare Guerra, Marilena Maniaci, Irma Pagliari and Melania Zanetti. "Preservation of cultural heritage is ensured by coherent, coordinated and planned activities involving study, prevention, maintenance and conservation treatments'. The beginning of Article 29 of the Italian Cultural Heritage Code clarifies the way to perform preservation, but does not define it. The following is a proposed definition: preservation is a combination of all the actions carried out directly or indirectly to slow down the degradation which material components of cultural heritage undergo due to time and use, and thus preservation ensures their accessibility at the present time and hands them down to the future generations. The conference results from these preliminary considerations and addresses curators, conservators, restorers and all those who use archives and libraries for study, work or pleasure. The conference is divided into the following sessions, each one allocating time for debate. Participation is free of charge but it is essential to register at <URL:https://eventbrite.it/event/15681162780/> Italian is the language of the conference.
