Preventive Conservator Conservation and Scientific Research British Museum Part time; 3 days per week Fixed Term; until 31 March 2017 UKP24,625 per annum Ref: 1453742 The Museum is looking to recruit an individual to act as the lead preventive conservator to support the relocation of collections material to new facilities within the World Conservation and Exhibition Centre (WCEC). They will help provide preventive conservation, collection care, handling and housekeeping advice and expertise, and training in relevant areas, in collaboration with other stakeholders. Key areas of responsibility: To advise on all aspects of the condition assessment, handling, packing, freezing, anoxia, transport and storage of the wide range of objects that are involved in the WCEC collection move to ensure the most appropriate environmental conditions, materials, approaches and technologies are adopted. To help identify any potentially sensitive or hazardous materials, make appropriate recommendations for how to handle such materials and to assist with the process of quarantining and inspections of items that are unsuitable for freezing or anoxia. To act as on-site preventive conservator at Orsman Road and Blythe House and to help maintain the environmental systems and collate data to ensure agreed conditions are maintained and to help deliver the integrated pest management (IPM) strategy across all parts of the Museum. To keep other relevant staff in the Department of Conservation and Scientific Research abreast of progress in the WCEC collections move. To promote best practices throughout the Museum for the long term preservation of its collections. Person Specification: The successful candidate will have a recognised professional qualification in preventive conservation, conservation or heritage science (or equivalent experience) with practical experience in preventive care of museum or heritage collections. You will have good knowledge of current conservation practice and ethical standards and a demonstrable ability to solve complex problems. The ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the museum and with a wide range of external stakeholders is essential for this post as is the ability to prioritise own workload.
