Masterclass "Archeological Iron" Amsterdam 8-10 April 2015 Valentin Boissonnas The University of Amsterdam organizes from a Masterclass "Archeological Iron" 8-10 April 2015 by Valentin Boissonnas MA. This intensive course aimed at restorers, conservation scientists and related professionals practicing within the field. Archaeological iron is one of the most problematic materials to come out of the ground as it can develop post-excavation corrosion that can destroy artefacts in a relatively short time. This three-day workshop will focus on the following topics: pre-industrial iron smelting technology, iron transformation, the formation of iron corrosion products in the soil, the preservation of the limit of the original surface within corrosion layers, post-excavation corrosion phenomena, the storage and stabilization treatments of archaeological iron. Hands-on experience will be given with mechanical cleaning and x-raying of archaeological iron artefacts from Dutch excavations. The workshop lasts four days and is given in the Ateliergebouw, one of the locations of the University of Amsterdam. The participation fee is 545 euros.
