Director of the Conservation Department The Munch Museum NB: New Application deadline February 5, 2015 Edvard Munch's art is Norway's greatest contribution to the world's art heritage. As custodian of a majority of Munch's works, the Munch Museum has a unique position as purveyor of art and culture in an international context. The Munch Museum is an independent agency of the Municipality of Oslo with responsibility for both the Munch Museum and the Stenersen Museum. The merging of these two museums in a new building in the Oslo harbour area of Bjorvika will strengthen our ability to communicate to a broader public-locally, nationally and internationally The Munch Museum is offering a professional career opportunity as Director of the Conservator Department. The main task of the department is to preserve and conserve the art collection, including the planning and implementation of diverse research projects, to insure that the works are available for future generations to enjoy. The department currently consists of 11 conservators: eight specialists in painting, three specialists in works on paper, four conservation technicians and a mounting technician. Main Activities/Responsibilities: Professional and administrative management of the department's staff Participation in the museum's governing body Responsibility for managing the department's budget, and reporting the department's financial status and activities to the museum's governing body Responsibility for new developments and research in the field of conservation Overall responsibility for the care and management of the collection Other assignments related to conservation The Conservation Department has recently invested in FTIR, Raman and IR-GC analysis equipment, for the purpose of conducting investigations that will provide us with a better understanding of Munch's various techniques and material use. The analyses also provide us with increased knowledge about degradation phenomena and can be used to develop new conservation methods. As head of the department you will be expected to organise and engage in various research projects, some of which are in progress. The conservation department also contributes to many different facets of the museum's activities. Specifications and Skills: Practical experience and expertise in performing complex conservation treatments Extensive knowledge of conservation methodology Leadership experience Ability to cultivate relationships and have an extensive network Analytical, solution-oriented and genuinely interested in developments in the conservation field The ability to work in a team as well as initiate and develop independent projects and have good interpersonal skills Good negotiating skills Good organisational skills Be in command of spoken and written Norwegian and English. If the candidate does not speak Norwegian, it is expected that he or she aspire to learn it Personal suitability for the position will be prioritised Formal Requirements: MA or MS, or the equivalent, in Paintings Conservation.
