Talk on the history of the profession by Jacob Simon Robing Room at Freemason's Hall 60 Great Queen Street London WC2B 5AZ Monday, 23 February 2015 Research Fellow, National Portrait Gallery, Will give an important talk on the history of the profession. The National Portrait Gallery and the history of conservation. This talk surveys the history of painting and other restoration and conservation work at the National Portrait Gallery from its foundation in 1856. It presents this history within the context of conservation at a dozen leading institutions in London and beyond, conservation histories for which are being published on the Gallery's website as they are completed. The talk is illustrated by case examples, mainly drawn from the Gallery's early history. Jacob Simon is Research Fellow, National Portrait Gallery, and Editor of the Walpole Society's annual journal for British art history, both voluntary positions. He served as the Gallery's Chief Curator, 2001-11. He has produced biographical resources for the Gallery's website on British picture restorers, 1630-1950, British artists' suppliers, 1650-1950 and British picture framemakers, 1610-1950. Freemasons Hall is close to both Covent Garden and Holborn Tube Stations. Doors open at 6pm.
