Conservator - Projects
Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies (HALS)

Variable hours contract

Salary UKP22,937 - UKP27,924 pa pro rata (effective from 1 January
2015)

This post offers a new opportunity to join the team at a busy county
archives and local studies service to assist with projects large and
small. Working alongside HALS' Conservator, your main focus will be
practical preservation and conservation work to preserve and repair
material held by HALS, for specific projects, primarily those funded
by grants, bequests and chargeable services. There is also the
scope for assisting with the provision of conservation services,
preparation of materials for digitisation or exhibition, and
learning activities. There may also be a need for some practical
cover for other conservation duties from time to time.

This role is offered as a variable hours contract for work when
funding is available. Hours will be variable by agreement during
HALS opening hours, plus Mondays. Other evening and weekend times
may be possible for learning and outreach activities.

You will have a recognised qualification in paper conservation and
an excellent knowledge of the appropriate conservation methods,
preservation and collections care for a wide range of physical
media. An effective communicator, with good ICT skills, methodical
and accurate, you will be able to prioritise your workload to meet
deadlines and agreed targets. In return we can offer the chance to
develop your skills working with a range of materials from medieval
deeds to modern books, whilst working for an organisation that
values its employees and invests in training and a Career
Development Scheme.

For an informal discussion please contact: Jeff Cargill,
Conservator; Chris Bennett, County Archivist or Julie Gregson, Head
