Conservator - Organics (2 positions)
Conservation and Scientific Research
British Museum

Full Time; 41 hours per week
Fixed Term Contract; 3 years in duration
UKP24,381 per annum

Ref: 1389641

The Department of Conservation and Scientific Research is looking to
recruit a Conservator to assist with the conservation of the
collection of organic artefacts (archaeological, historic and
contemporary) and to contribute to the care of the collections
programme, in particular through the assessment, preparation and
treatment of objects from the Africa, Oceania and Americas
Department for the re-location from offsite storage in North and
West London to new facilities within the World Conservation and
Exhibition Centre (WCEC) in Bloomsbury.

The successful candidate will act as conservation liaison for the
collections move and work in collaboration with a range of
stakeholders across the museum. You will independently carry out
all aspects of practical conservation on a wide range of organic
objects for transport to and storage in the new WCEC. This will
require the ability to evaluate different options for an objects
treatment and the suitability of an object for transport and
storage. You will carry out preventive conservation measures as
appropriate. You will also be responsible for collaborating with
and advising curatorial and collection services staff on the WCEC
collection move and on best practice in storage, and assist with
training in this area.

The successful candidate will have a recognised professional
qualification in the conservation of archaeological, historic or
contemporary organic materials. You will be able to demonstrate
excellent practical skills in the conservation of organic materials
and have post-training experience in the Museum sector working with
a range of objects made from organic materials. You will be a good
team player, with the ability to work independently. You will
ideally have experience with collection storage work or with
re-housing or moving a collection to new storage facilities.
