Subject: Materials for clamshell boxes
The Folger Shakespeare Library is preparing for a rehousing project for many of its rare items. As part of our planning process, we have begun investigating the longevity of materials commonly used in the creation of archival clamshells. While we have already gathered sufficient information to decide upon an adhesive and millboard, we are still attempting to gather information on covering and paper lining materials. After performing a few simple in-house tests, we have narrowed our covering material options down to the following: Canapetta, color 1411 Asahi, color 2499B We have also decided on the following paper stock for further investigation: Heritage Archival pHotokraft in Old Grey Ivory, both the 170 and 350 gsm weights At this time, we are interested in determining if anyone in the conservation/preservation community has tested these materials already and are willing to share the results with us. We are not interested in a specific type of test but instead would like to know what range of tests have been performed and the results. We would also be interested in any procedures/protocols that institutions have developed for material selection and construction of their archival clamshells.
