Subject: Materiality
Materiality is a themed journal that includes essay, images, fiction and poetry, focusing on the physical and the material. Issue two is now available, with the theme of "Time" The magazine is aimed at a general audience but contains articles by and of interest to conservators. Topics in this issue include clocks and watches, timetables and time travel, growth and decay. You may enjoy "Sense and Sempiternal-ability" by MaryJo Lelyveld, about the 10,000 year clock and how to last forever, Helen Gill's drawings of cracks in paintings, or Alex Ellem's essay on the development of the calendar ("Patterns of the past, portals to the future"). There are also contributions by letterpress printer Caren Florance ("Do it for the love: letterpress and time") and watchmaker Tom Ashton ("What's in a watch?"). The hard copy features two sets of flip-book illustrations (time-based art in miniature!) by Albertine Hamilton and Gracia & Louise, and a small zine in the back pocket by Mike Lynch. Materiality can be purchased at <URL:http://www.pinknantucket-press.myshopify.com> The hard copy and digital bundle is AU $15 (plus postage); the digital only version (PDF and EPUB) is AU $4.99. DistList readers may also be interested in contributing to future issues. Materiality welcomes contributions from conservators, curators, materials scientists, photographers, hobbyists, craftspeople, authors, artists, engineers and many others. Each issue will have a different theme; the theme of the next issue is "Precious" (in production); submissions for "Surface" will be due 30 March 2014.
