Fixed Term Contract; 6 months maternity cover (Full time)

Salary: GBP 24,381 per annum pro-rata

The British Museum is currently recruiting a Preventive
Conservator/Preventive Conservation Scientist to work within the
Department of Conservation and Scientific Research. The post holder
will help to provide a comprehensive and unified preventive
conservation service for the Museum 's collections, in collaboration
with other stakeholders.

This post will involve responsibility for monitoring the
environmental conditions across the Museum (galleries and stores),
maintaining the Hanwell radiotelemetric system and conducting Oddy
tests, as well as the provision of technical assistance and advice
to promote best practices throughout the Museum, for the long-term
preservation of its collections.

In addition, the post holder will provide assistance in matters
related to preventive conservation and collection care, particularly
for the opening of the new exhibition space and storage facilities
in the World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre in 2014.

The ideal candidate will have a recognised professional
qualification in conservation with practical experience in museum or
heritage collections care or preventive conservation.  They will
have an interest in the deterioration and conservation of historical
and archaeological artefacts, with a particular emphasis on the
impact of environmental factors on the preservation of such objects.
They will ideally have experience in assessing and monitoring all
aspects of environmental conditions (including light, vibration,
dust and pollutant levels etc), in undertaking materials testing,
and in delivering a preventive conservation strategy.

The Museum is looking to appoint a candidate who, ideally, is able
to start as soon as possible.
