Conservator (Paintings) Heritage Conservation Centre (HCC), Singapore The National Heritage Board (NHB) preserves, presents and promotes the cultural heritage of Singapore. Our mission is to play the roles of safeguarding and promoting the heritage of Singapore's diverse communities, for the purpose of education, nation-building and cultural understanding. The Heritage Conservation Centre (HCC) is a purpose-built facility for the storage and conservation of all artworks and artefacts under the care of NHB. Conservation comprises 4 specialisations; objects conservation, paintings conservation, paper conservation, and textiles conservation. We are now seeking 2 candidates for the Conservator (Paintings) position. Job Description The main responsibilities are: Undertake assessment, documentation, and conservation treatments to historical, modern and contemporary paintings from the NHB collections Extensive practical work for exhibition and storage needs Provide close supervision and coaching of direct and indirect reportee/s Performs conservation analysis and tests in contributing to the preservation and conservation knowledge of the NHB collections May need to manage and/or implement preventive conservation projects, including environmental monitoring and pest management relating to collections care in storage, on loan and on display May be involved in liaising for exhibition, project management and participate in gallery development May be involved in the conservation study or research projects undertaken by the Paintings Conservation Section Brief description of collection: At HCC, the Painting Conservation Department mainly deals with the painting collection of the National Heritage Board. The collection are associated to the different institutions under NHB, namely, National Museum of Singapore, Singapore Arts Museum, SAM at 8Q, Asian Civilisations Museum, and the Peranakan Museum. There are also opportunities to work with the collections from the Heritage institutions like Indian Heritage Centre, Malay Heritage Centre, Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall and conservation of paintings for the inaugural of National Arts Gallery of Singapore. NHB collections consist of artworks focusing on South East Asia, ranging from the historical, Nanyang style, Modern and Contemporary Art, etc. In the Collection of National Museum of Singapore are paintings which are the oldest which are from the Straits Settlement, consisting mainly of life size portraits to landscapes of the older Singapore and the nearby region. The Asian Civilisations Museum and Peranakan Museum, are concentrated mainly on the culturally related materials locally (Peranakan and other ethnic groups) and Asia Pacific. Work location and arrangement: The conservator shall mostly be based at HCC at 32 Jurong Port Road. The conservator shall be working in the Paintings Conservation team in HCC, alongside Objects Conservation Section, Paper Conservation Section, and Textiles Conservation Section. There are currently 6 other conservators who work intensively on the collections. The Centre encourages cross disciplinary interaction hence the Paintings Conservator is encouraged to leverage on the other areas of specialisation that are currently in HCC to enhance the conservation decision-making process. Qualifications and Other Requirements Candidate should have a recognized first degree (bachelor's or honours) or a Masters degree in Conservation, with 6 to 8 years of relevant practical experience. Institutional/public experience is preferred Familiarity and experience with cultural materials in South East Asia, as well as modern and contemporary installation art will be advantageous Ability to carry out comprehensive treatments on paintings with high degree of manual dexterity and aesthetic sensitivity Possess strong verbal and written communication skills Possess initiative with ability to multi-task, organise and prioritise work in given timeline Positive attitude, a strong team player who can share and also work independently when required Ability and experience to coach and impart conservation skills and knowledge effectively Possess a wide exposure in handling multi-cultural materials with sensitivity and demonstrate relevance in making sound contextual judgements in applying conservation principles and practices Ability to work under minimal supervision as well as being a cooperative member of staff Ability to adapt in a multi-lingual and multi-racial environment Keep up to date with the latest conservation development through research and training.
