Subject: Conservator for the Sal Mar Construction sought
Object Conservator (consultant) University of Illinois Library The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign campus (UIUC) is home to the Sal Mar Construction <URL:http://distributedmuseum.blogspot.com/p/sal-mar-construction_1.html> The instrument, named the Sal-Mar Construction, is a hybrid system (both analog and digital) that the player can use interactively to produce real-time composition using up to 24 spatialized audio channels. It was created using parts from the aging ILLIAC II supercomputer. The Sal Mar Construction currently permanently resides in the Sousa Archives on campus. The Library's Conservation Laboratory is looking for an objects conservator to perform treatment in-situ on this musical instrument. Project: Currently, the Sal Mar Construction has masking tape with felt tipped pen labeling the electronic board. You can view labeling in this video <URL:http://vimeo.com/75218660> Conservation would like to remove the masking tape and replace with it with a more legible and archival overlay or alternative. The masking tape is on laminate and abutted to the metal grommets which are pertinent to the musical instrument so we are looking for experts in the field. <URL:http://archives.library.illinois.edu/archon/?p=digitallibrary/digitalcontent&id=4765> UIUC Sousa Archives has a electrical engineer who will work with conservator to ensure the mechanics of the instrument are not harmed. I will be happy to discuss details to interested conservators as it is an unusual project.
