Position at University of Amsterdam

From: Rene de la Rie <rdelarie<-at->
Date: Thursday, October 3, 2013
Professor of Conservation Science
University of Amsterdam

Profile: The duties associated with this chair comprise teaching and
research on scientific aspects of the conservation and restoration
of moveable cultural heritage objects (conservation science). The
successful candidate will be appointed within both the Faculty of
Humanities and the Faculty of Science. This construction facilitates
the new professor to make use of the Faculty of Science buildings
and research infrastructure. The post is also closely connected to
the joint conservation centre of the Rijksmuseum, Cultural Heritage
Agency of the Netherlands, and the University of Amsterdam. The
position is 0.8 fte, to be extended to1.0 fte in case the professor
sufficiently fits in course schemes of the Faculty of Science.

Teaching: The Professor of Conservation Science will be responsible
for providing students and trainee restorers with a sound,
practice-oriented scientific training as part of the degree course
on the conservation and restoration of the cultural heritage.
His/her teaching should reflect 'state-of-the-art' scientific
research, particularly where such research is directly relevant to
conservation and restoration. In addition, however, it should be
consciously related to the practical and humanities aspects both of
the degree course curriculum and of the general field of
conservation and restoration studies, and should encourage students
to reflect on that relationship.

Research: Research likely includes field research in the context of
restoration projects and more theoretical research in both the arts
and the sciences. The appointee to this chair will focus on the
science of the conservation and restoration of the moveable cultural
heritage across the board, but more particularly on research in the
fields of the applied and decorative arts. The research will also
involve the relationship between the relevant science and other
disciplines, and between it and conservation and restoration
practice.
