This talk will review the basic information that conservators commissioning technical studies need in order to make good choices given the wide variety of new services and approaches that have become available in recent years. Three areas will be specifically covered: commissioning technical imaging (for example the differences in IR capture systems and digital vs. film X-ray), the investigation of fakes and forgeries (such as the minimum standards needed for investigations to support claims) and the identification of historical painting materials and practices for conservation and technical art history.
