Subject: Symposium on textiles
"Weaving Royal Traditions Through Time: Textiles and Dress at the Thai Court and Beyond" Bangkok, Thailand November 5-9, 2013 The Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles (QSMT) on the grounds of the Grand Palace, Bangkok, will host an international and multi-disciplinary symposium. The museum, which opened in May 2012, collects, displays, and preserves textiles from Thailand and Southeast Asia, with an emphasis on the heritage of Thailand and Her Majesty's collections of ethnographic, royal and personal textiles. The 4 day program includes presentations by significant scholars from Thailand, Japan, China, Singapore, USA, UK and others. It will bring together a diverse group of people who share an interest in the history of royal textiles, their trade, use, and conservation. Talks will cover topics such as Indian, Chinese, and Cambodian textiles for the court of Siam; Thai influences on Burmese royal dress; a late 19th century collection of Indonesian batiks collected by Rama V; dressing modern royalty, and the preservation of royal collections in Thailand, Bhutan, UK and Singapore. The Conservation Session, chaired by Julia Brennan, will include talks by conservators from the Heritage Conservation Centre in Singapore, the Royal Textile Academy in Bhutan, Hampton Court Palace UK, and the QSMT. The presentation program is augmented by special tours to see behind-the-scenes of the QSMT, as well as private collections that are not often open to the public. In addition to the program, there is a one-day pre-symposium tour of Bangkok, and a 4-day textile tour of weaving villages of North-east Thailand, led by members of the QSMT. It promises to be a stimulating and fun gathering, in the heart of South East Asia, and devoted to royal textiles.
