You could box your special collections materials. Boxing will also
protect items from dust and provide microclimates to smooth
fluctuations in temperature and humidity. The boxes should not
extend much beyond the shelf so that the aisles will still close
completely. Such boxes are available from archival supply vendors.
For fragile items, use folders or book wrappers, for storing in the
boxes.  Boxes should be filled to avoid wasting space.  Store
volumes spine down or flat to protect the bindings. Fliptop boxes
intended for vertical storage can be stored flat. Label the boxes
with a list of catalog numbers and titles.
