Subject: Mobile shelving

You could box your special collections materials. Boxing will also protect items from dust and provide microclimates to smooth fluctuations in temperature and humidity. The boxes should not extend much beyond the shelf so that the aisles will still close completely. Such boxes are available from archival supply vendors. For fragile items, use folders or book wrappers, for storing in the boxes. Boxes should be filled to avoid wasting space. Store volumes spine down or flat to protect the bindings. Fliptop boxes intended for vertical storage can be stored flat. Label the boxes with a list of catalog numbers and titles. Gary D.
