Dr. Marc Walton has been appointed the inaugural Senior Scientist
for the Northwestern University-Art Institute of Chicago Center for
Scientific Studies in the Arts (NU-ACCESS) starting September 1,
2013. In this role, Marc will be responsible for providing
intellectual and operational leadership to the Center. Marc will
also assume the title Research Associate Professor in the Department
of Materials Science and Engineering.

Marc is currently an associate scientist at the Getty Conservation
Institute where he is responsible for the scientific study of
antiquities at the J. Paul Getty Museum. In addition, he established
and runs the analytical laboratory at the Getty Villa site, and
serves as co-PI on a National Science Foundation Cultural Heritage
Science grant on ancient Athenian pottery. His research has focused
primarily on trade and manufacture of ancient objects. Marc was
trained in Chemistry and Art History at Clark University. He earned
a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford in archaeological science
following an MA in art history, as well as a diploma in the
conservation of works of art, from the Institute of Fine Arts, New
York University. After earning his Ph.D, Marc worked at the Los
Angeles County Museum of Art for two years prior to joining the
Getty Conservation Institute in 2005.

NU-ACCESS is the first Center of its kind to make its resources open
to both internal and external users via merit-review proposals,
within the framework of pursuing both objects-based and
objects-inspired scientific research in the arts. External proposals
for the current calendar year will be accepted until September 15,
2013.
