Contract Type: Permanent About The Libraries: The University of Oxford's many libraries together form the Bodleian Libraries, which contain the largest and most diverse collections for the support of teaching and research in any institution of higher education in the United Kingdom. The Libraries contain more than 10 million volumes; and, if periodical parts are included, grows by over 1000 items per day throughout the year. A large proportion of the library stock will be preserved in perpetuity and a significant percentage of the legal deposit intake forms a part of the national printed archive. In addition to its vast print and archival collections, Bodleian Libraries offers access to 22,500 e-journals and over 900 licensed electronic databases and reference works. The library service is currently also significantly extending its e-book collection to support both learning and research. For more information about the libraries please visit: <URL:http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk> Job Description Summary: You will help provide a comprehensive and unified preventive conservation service for the Libraries' collections, by providing authoritative advice on preventive conservation issues for Bodleian Libraries' collections whether on display, in storage or in transit. Your main responsibility will be management of the Libraries' environmental monitoring systems and programs, emergency equipment inventories and salvage operations in the event of emergencies that threaten collections. You will also be expected to assist with training of library staff on preventive measures and to carry out research linked with preventive conservation projects and to publish findings as appropriate. You will have a recognised professional qualification in conservation with an emphasis on preventive issues, and/or experience of collections care and preventive conservation activities in a library or similar context. You will exhibit a sound understanding of the preservation of library objects, and experience in using monitoring equipment for temperature, relative humidity, light, pests, vibration, pollution, etc. You will demonstrate the ability to gather, analyse, structure and present information in various formats. You will also have the ability to prioritise and plan own workload, to implement programs of work efficiently without continuous supervision and as part of a team, and to cope with changing priorities and deadlines. You will possess good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly, effectively and professionally with a wide range of stakeholders.
