BMGA is an ambitious, creative and innovative service, with the
opening of its new museum 'M Shed' in 2011, and focus on developing
Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and three other museums, the
development of collections and enterprise, and delivering a vivid
and exciting integrated public programme, there is no better time to
join our team. A grant has been awarded to BMGA by the Esmee
Fairbairn Collections Fund to conserve, photograph, digitise,
research and promote, approximately 500 works on paper from the
archive of the Victorian traveller and explorer Adela Breton. In
the90s Adela Breton left Bath to travel in Mexico where she painted
watercolours and prepared tracings of the frescoes of the Upper
Temple of Jaguars at Chichen Itza in the Yucatan Peninsula. This
archive is extremely important as sadly most of the originals have
now disappeared and so these represent an incredibly valuable
record.

We are looking for a paper conservator to work on conserving and
re-storing the works as part of the overall project. The majority of
the works are watercolour on paper, with some painted photographs
and sketchbooks.

You will be joining a conservation team that currently comprises one
full-time paper conservator, one full-time and one part-time object
conservators, two oil painting conservators and one preventive
conservator. The post holder will report to the Senior Collections
Officer (World Cultures) who has responsibility for this particular
collection. The Conservation Studio is located at the Bristol
Museum and Art Gallery. Bristol is an Accredited Museums Service
with Designated collections, the largest service in the south west
of England and a Major Partner Museum under the Arts Council funding
scheme.

The successful candidate will be expected to have a recognised
conservation qualification or equivalent,considerable existing
museum conservation experience and expertise along with drive and
ambition. The hours are flexible, and could be part-time (3 days a
week for 2 years) or 4 days or full-time for a shorter period.

Applicants must be either EU nationals or hold a current permit that
will enable them to work in the UK. Please note that we cannot
accept CVs.
