Collections Officer (Paper Conservator) BG10: UKP25,472 - UKP28,636 Part time, 22 hours, fixed term for up to two years Based at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, UK. Ref: 24064 BMGA is an ambitious, creative and innovative service, with the opening of its new museum 'M Shed' in 2011, and focus on developing Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and three other museums, the development of collections and enterprise, and delivering a vivid and exciting integrated public programme, there is no better time to join our team. A grant has been awarded to BMGA by the Esmee Fairbairn Collections Fund to conserve, photograph, digitise, research and promote, approximately 500 works on paper from the archive of the Victorian traveller and explorer Adela Breton. In the90s Adela Breton left Bath to travel in Mexico where she painted watercolours and prepared tracings of the frescoes of the Upper Temple of Jaguars at Chichen Itza in the Yucatan Peninsula. This archive is extremely important as sadly most of the originals have now disappeared and so these represent an incredibly valuable record. We are looking for a paper conservator to work on conserving and re-storing the works as part of the overall project. The majority of the works are watercolour on paper, with some painted photographs and sketchbooks. You will be joining a conservation team that currently comprises one full-time paper conservator, one full-time and one part-time object conservators, two oil painting conservators and one preventive conservator. The post holder will report to the Senior Collections Officer (World Cultures) who has responsibility for this particular collection. The Conservation Studio is located at the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. Bristol is an Accredited Museums Service with Designated collections, the largest service in the south west of England and a Major Partner Museum under the Arts Council funding scheme. The successful candidate will be expected to have a recognised conservation qualification or equivalent,considerable existing museum conservation experience and expertise along with drive and ambition. The hours are flexible, and could be part-time (3 days a week for 2 years) or 4 days or full-time for a shorter period.
