Andrew W. Mellon Advanced Training Fellowship in Textile Conservation The Cleveland Museum of Art The conservation department of the Cleveland Museum of Art seeks applicants for an Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for Advanced Training in Textile Conservation. This appointment begins no earlier than October 2013 and may be extended for up to an additional two years. The Mellon Fellow will take part in all aspects of installation and preventative care and preservation activities concerning the Cleveland Museum of Art's encyclopedic textile collection. The Fellow will have the opportunity for in-depth examination and treatment of textiles, research related to the collection, and to participate in a wide range of conservation activities with conservators, collections care specialists and curators. The significant resources of the Cleveland Museum of Art, including the library and archives, and nearby Case Western Reserve University, contribute to the fellowship program. Fellows are encouraged to carry out a research project culminating in a publishable paper. The Cleveland Museum of Art is renowned for the quality and breadth of its collection, which includes almost 45,000 objects and spans 6,000 years of achievement in the arts. The textile collection, mirroring the collection as a whole in its encyclopedic nature, numbers some 4,500 objects; collection strengths include Central Asian, Coptic, and Islamic textiles, as well as contemporary fiber art. Currently undergoing a multi-phase renovation and expansion project across its campus, the museum is a significant international forum for exhibitions, scholarship, performing arts and art education. One of the top comprehensive art museums in the nation and free of charge to all, the Cleveland Museum of Art is located in the University Circle neighborhood. The Museum's conservation department employs 13 full-time staff members, including conservators in paper, Asian paintings, textiles, paintings, and objects, as well as technicians, a chief conservator, and a departmental assistant. At any given time, the department also hosts numerous pre-program conservation interns, third-year interns, fellows, and volunteers. The fellowship includes a $30,000 stipend, health insurance, paid time off and a travel/research allowance. Eligibility Graduates from recognized training programs or candidates with equivalent training will be considered. Applicants should have no more than five years of conservation-related work experience. A proven record of research and writing ability, as well as English-language skills, is required.
